Avatar: The Way of Water has passed the $2 billion mark in worldwide box office gross in just six weeks. The sequel, which was released in December 2022, has been a huge financial success for 20th Century Studios and Walt Disney Studios. Avatar sequel ($2 billion and counting) make it director James Cameron’s third film to join the $2 billion box-office club, alongside the first Avatar ($2.92 billion) and Titanic ($2.2 billion).
The Way of Water is the second film in James Cameron’s Avatar franchise, following the 2009 original. The sequel has been praised for its use of cutting-edge technology, including the use of motion-capture and performance-capture techniques, which allowed for the creation of fully-realized digital characters. The film also features a strong environmental message and its visuals have been praised for their stunning depiction of the ocean and its inhabitants.
The Avatar franchise has now grossed over $6 billion worldwide, making it one of the most successful film franchises of all time. The third and fourth Avatar sequels are currently in production and are set to be released in 2024 and 2025 respectively. Nothing officially confirmed yet.
