Thanos’ Quest for the Power Stone was the Focus of a 45-Minute Deleted Scene in Avengers: Infinity War
Jim Starlin, the creator of Thanos, recently disclosed that Avengers: Infinity War had a 45-minute deleted scene that remained unfinished. The scene would have showcased Thanos’ trip to Xandar to retrieve the Power Stone, the first of the Infinity Stones. According to Collider, Starlin discussed the scene as a guest on Near Mint Condition. In the final cut of the film, the story begins with Thanos already possessing the Power Stone, using it to defeat Thor, Loki, and Hulk, and acquiring the Space Stone from the Tesseract.
However, the deleted scene would have depicted Thanos’ devastating journey to Xandar, where he destroys the planet and the Nova Corps to obtain the Power Stone. Starlin revealed that despite the scene being shot, it was eventually cut due to cost concerns and the desire to avoid making the film as lengthy as Avengers: Endgame. The Russo brothers had informed him via email that they had cut 45 minutes of Thanos from the movie about a month before its release.
Starlin’s statement that Marvel did not anticipate the huge success of Avengers: Infinity War is also noteworthy. The film grossed over $2.05 billion globally and currently sits at the sixth position on the list of highest-grossing films of all time.
