Report: Sony Working on Wireless Earbuds for PS5
According to reports, Sony is working on expanding its audio hardware line by developing new earbuds and wireless headsets for the PS5. The earbuds, codenamed Project Nomad, are expected to offer five hours of battery life, come with their own charging case, and can be recharged via USB-C when plugged into the PS5 console. Sony already offers several lines of earbuds, some of which feature a noise-canceling technology.
Meanwhile, Sony’s new headset, called Voyager, is rumored to offer functionality similar to the Inzone H7 headset and could launch by the end of Sony’s 2023 financial year. It is speculated that Sony could reveal the existence of these new audio products at an upcoming State of Play event, reportedly scheduled for next month.
Sony’s current main offering for audio on the PS5 is the Pulse headset, which was released alongside the console in November 2020. However, since then, third-party manufacturers have also started offering wireless and wired headsets for the PS5. Additionally, 2023 is shaping up to be a big year for Sony on the hardware front, with the arrival of PSVR 2 this month and a rumored PS5 with a detachable disc drive.
At CES 2023, Sony declared that the PlayStation shortage is essentially over, after two years of struggling with supply constraints. PlayStation boss Jim Ryan said that “everyone who wants a PS5 should have a much easier time finding one at retailers globally, starting from this point forward.” Sony also announced that the PS5 has sold 30 million units globally, with December 2022 being the biggest month of all time for PS5 sales.
