Hogwarts Legacy Racks Up $850 Million In Revenue And Sells 12 Million Copies In Just Two Weeks

Warner Bros. Games has announced that Hogwarts Legacy has sold 12 million copies and earned $850 million in revenue during its first two weeks on the market. This makes it the biggest launch in the history of Warner Bros. Games, surpassing Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II’s $1 billion in retail sales during its first 10 days. Hogwarts Legacy also set a Twitch record by reaching 1.28 million peak concurrent viewers at launch, making it the most-viewed single-player game in Twitch’s history.

Players have spent a collective 280 million hours in Hogwarts Legacy so far. The game will expand to PS4 and Xbox One in April and to the Nintendo Switch in July. Despite the game’s success, it has been the subject of controversy due to author JK Rowling’s transphobic remarks. However, the game’s developer, Avalanche Software, has confirmed that there are no plans for downloadable content, including the addition of Quidditch.

Confirmed: Mortal Kombat 12 Set for Release in 2023

Mortal Kombat 12 has finally been confirmed by Warner Bros. Discovery’s president and CEO, David Zaslav, during the company’s Q4 2022 earnings call. The much-anticipated game is set to be released later this year.

Zaslav revealed that the launch of Mortal Kombat 12, along with Rocksteady’s Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League, is a key part of Warner Bros. Discovery’s video game business strategy for the coming year. He also stated that the company has “ambitious launch projections” for both games.

Despite the lack of an official statement from NetherRealm Studios, the developer behind the game, fans have long speculated about the possibility of a new Mortal Kombat game. Mortal Kombat co-creator and NetherRealm chief creative officer Ed Boon has teased fans on social media about upcoming game announcements in the past, and in October 2022 he hinted that the announcement of the studio’s next project was “coming in due time.”

Last year, some fans believed that NetherRealm producer Jonathan Andersen had leaked Mortal Kombat 12’s existence when an image of his work desk showed a file name on his monitor titled “MK12_Mast…” along with an email that read “Our fans eagerly scrape the internet.”

Mortal Kombat 11, the previous game in the series, was released in 2019 and has sold over 12 million copies as of July 2021. Mortal Kombat celebrated its 30th anniversary last year, making the release of Mortal Kombat 12 all the more exciting for fans of the long-running franchise.

Upcoming Lord of the Rings Movies in Development, Will Not be Remakes or Rehashes of Previous Stories.

A new deal between New Line Cinema, Warner Bros. and Embracer Group has been signed to produce additional Lord of the Rings movies. The exact details of the upcoming projects have not been announced, but it has been confirmed that they will not be remakes or retreads of stories previously told in Middle Earth.

The news was revealed by Warner Bros Discovery CEO David Zaslav during a company call regarding Q4 2022 earnings, according to reports from Deadline and The Hollywood Reporter. In August 2022, Embracer Group had acquired the franchise’s film rights. The Lord of the Rings trilogy and Hobbit films were produced by Warner Bros. and New Line.

A statement from Warner Bros Pictures Group Co-CEOs Michael De Luca and Pam Addy indicated that the new films would explore previously uncharted territories of J.R.R. Tolkien’s vast and complex universe. The statement read, “The opportunity to invite fans deeper into the cinematic world of Middle-earth is an honor, and we are excited to partner with Middle-earth Enterprises and Embracer on this adventure.”

Currently, an animated Lord of the Rings film titled The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim is already in production. It is centered around one of the legendary kings of Rohan and is set 183 years before the events of the original films.

There has been no announcement regarding the focus of the new movies, nor whether the original cast and creative staff will be involved. Embracer had previously floated the idea of films about Gandalf, Aragorn, Galadriel, and Eowyn. In recent years, the Amazon Prime TV show The Rings of Power has been the most prominent Lord of the Rings project, with its first season debuting in 2022.

Artifact -The News App Created By Instagram Co-founders, Is Now Available To The Public

Artifact, the personalized news curation app created by Instagram’s co-founders, is now available for download on the Apple App Store in most English-speaking markets and on Android. The waitlist has been removed, and users no longer require a phone number to use the app, except to create an account and switch to a different device.

The team has added several new features, including a social element that allows users to upload their contacts to see if a particular article is popular among friends. A badge appears next to an article that has gained traction among contacts, but privacy considerations prevent users from seeing which specific friends have read a story or how many. Artifact has stats feature that shows the categories and publishers users read most frequently, and the app groups articles into more narrowly defined topics.

In the future, Artifact will add a way for users to share and comment on articles within the app. The beta version already has a Discover feed that shows what people are sharing, and users can like and comment on those shared articles. The app also allows users to indicate when they don’t like an article or publisher and will show them less of that content. Blocking publishers is also possible.

Overall, Artifact’s suggestions become more tailored to a user’s preferences the more they use it and provide feedback. It reminds the author of Facebook’s old Paper app, which was their favorite Meta creation to date. Although Artifact lacks Facebook’s social graph, its creators’ track record suggests the app has a good chance of success.

Destiny 2 Cheat Developer Ordered to Pay Bungie Over $4 Million in Lawsuit

After a two-year legal battle, Bungie has emerged victorious in its lawsuit against cheat maker AimJunkies. AimJunkies, owned by Phoenix Digital Group, has been ordered by a judge to pay Bungie $3.6 million in damages and $700,000 in legal expenses for creating aimbots for Destiny 2 and other FPS games. The lawsuit began in 2021, with the courts initially dismissing some of Bungie’s claims. However, Bungie re-filed its lawsuit in May and was successful in convincing the court that AimJunkies had violated its copyright on Destiny 2.

According to documents obtained by Torrent Freak, one of AimJunkies’ engineers reverse-engineered the game code to create and sell aimbots, circumventing bans to do so. This violated the software licensing agreement that the engineer had agreed to in order to download the game. Additionally, Phoenix Digital Group was found to be uncooperative with Bungie’s legal requests, deleting records of cheat software, and destroying financial records related to the sales of the cheats. The judge cited the company’s willingness to “conceal” its cheat sales as contributing to a heavier punishment than it otherwise might have received.

The damages awarded to Bungie came to a total of $3,657,500 for the 1,361 violations, with an additional $738,722 in legal fees. While the previous lawsuit found that making Destiny 2 cheats did not violate Bungie’s copyright, the current judge found that the software had violated Washington’s consumer protection laws. The court ruled that players who use cheats have an unfair and deceptive advantage over players who don’t. The combination of copyright laws, destruction of evidence, and gamer rights all played a role in helping Bungie’s lawyers secure over four million dollars in fees and damages.

Valve Uses Honeypot to Catch and Ban 40,000 Dota 2 Cheaters

In the last few weeks, Valve has permanently banned over 40,000 Dota 2 accounts found using third-party software to cheat. These cheaters utilized software to access the game’s internal data, which is not usually visible during gameplay.

Valve’s primary objective was to address the security flaws that enabled cheating in the first place. Nonetheless, the company also took further action to eliminate these dishonest players. “With that objective in mind, we issued a patch as soon as we became aware of the cheating methods,” Valve explained in a statement.

Valve went on to say, “This patch created a honeypot: a section of data inside the game client that would never be read during normal gameplay, but that could be read by these exploits. Each of the accounts banned today read from this ‘secret’ area in the client, giving us extremely high confidence that every ban was well-deserved.”
