Major Acquisition in Gaming Industry Makes Headlines

Savvy Games, a division of Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund, has made one of the largest acquisitions in the history of the video game industry by purchasing game studio Scopely for $4.9 billion. The acquisition places Scopely as the sixth-largest gaming buyout ever, behind acquisitions by Activision, Microsoft, Tencent, and Take-Two. Savvy Games stated in a press release that the deal, which is pending regulatory approval, will strengthen the company’s ability to deliver new and exciting products for the global gaming community. Scopely is a well-known developer that has worked on popular franchises such as Star Trek, The Walking Dead, and Marvel, as well as the colorful battle royale game Stumble Guys.

Under the deal, Scopely will continue to operate independently under the banner of Savvy and will look to extend its businesses to PC and console, in addition to continued operation in the mobile space. The co-CEOs of Scopely, Walter Driver and Javier Ferreira, will continue to lead the company. Savvy Games CEO Brian Ward, a former Activision Blizzard executive, said his company looks forward to helping Scopely accelerate its ambitions.

Savvy has been making significant investments in the gaming space for some time, with minority ownership positions in Capcom, Nexon, EA, and Take-Two. Savvy also owns 40 million shares of Activision Blizzard and is in line for a huge payday if Microsoft’s deal to buy Activision Blizzard goes through. Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund is looking to grow the size of its portfolio to more than $1.07 trillion by the end of 2025 and has been diversifying its portfolio with gaming investments, backing the LIV Golf tournament series, and other efforts to create a new image for itself amid claims of its “addiction” to oil.

Check out the Assortment of Character Posters for the Upcoming Film Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3

Marvel Studios has released nine new character posters for the highly anticipated Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, directed by James Gunn. The posters feature the main cast, including Chris Pratt as Star-Lord, Zoe Saldana as Gamora, Dave Bautista as Drax, Karen Gillan as Nebula, Sean Gunn as Kraglin, Pom Klementieff as Mantis, Bradley Cooper as Rocket, Vin Diesel as Groot, and Maria Bakalova as Cosmo the Spacedog.

Fans are eagerly anticipating the release of the film, which is expected to bring the story to a close, but are also curious about which characters might not make it out alive. Gunn has hinted that most of the heroes will survive at least two movies, but it remains to be seen what will happen to Rocket Raccoon, who the story will revolve around.

In Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, the misfit heroes are adjusting to life on Knowhere when Rocket’s past comes back to haunt him. Peter Quill, still mourning the loss of Gamora, leads the team on a dangerous mission to save Rocket’s life. If they fail, it could mean the end of the Guardians as we know them.

Gunn has stated that he returned to direct this film to tell Rocket’s story, as the character has always been a central figure in the franchise. Rocket’s past, origins, and traumatic experiences will be explored in the film. The director believes that Rocket exemplifies the traits of all the Guardians and that his transformation into something he didn’t want to be made him feel incredibly isolated from others.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is set to hit U.S. theaters on May 5th, and fans can’t wait to see how the story ends.

HBO Max Greenlights Harry Potter TV Series with Plans for 7 Seasons

According to a report by Deadline, there is potential for a Harry Potter TV series to be developed for HBO Max, with author JK Rowling being close to signing on as a producer. While it’s still early in the process and nothing has been confirmed, the series is rumored to span seven seasons, with each season focusing on one of the seven Harry Potter books. While the project is still in the early stages, it is expected that a writer will be sought once Rowling signs on. There are no official details regarding casting, plot, or release date, and WB has yet to confirm the development of the series.

The CEO of WB Discovery, David Zaslav, has expressed excitement about focusing on tentpole franchises, and Harry Potter would undoubtedly be a part of that. According to the report, Zaslav has met with Rowling on multiple occasions and has supported her, despite ongoing controversy and criticism over her comments about transgender issues.

Although the spinoff movie series, Fantastic Beasts, seems to have stalled, the newest Harry Potter game, Hogwarts Legacy, has proven to be a commercial success, demonstrating the ongoing appeal of the Harry Potter series.

Xbox Releases New Controller Made From Recycled Materials

Microsoft has revealed a new Xbox controller called the “Remix Special Edition,” which is partly made of recycled plastic. In celebration of Earth Day, the company has used “post-consumer recycled resins with regrind consisting of previously molded colored parts” to create the new controller. Old Xbox One controller parts, as well as reclaimed materials like plastic water jugs, CDs, and automotive headlight covers, were also used. This not only has an environmental impact, but also gives each controller a unique design due to the different colors and particles used in the grinding process. The controller comes with Microsoft’s Xbox Rechargeable Battery Pack, which eliminates the need for disposable batteries. However, it is worth noting that only 33% of the controller is made of recycled plastic, and most recycled plastic products only use a small amount. The “Remix Special Edition” will be available for $85 starting on April 18.

Watch The First Look Teaser Trailer Released for Documentary on George A. Romero’s Resident Evil

A new documentary called George A. Romero’s Resident Evil is currently in development and the first teaser trailer has been released. The documentary focuses on the unmade Resident Evil movie that legendary director George A. Romero pitched to Constantin Films in 1998. The film will be directed by Brandon Salisbury and aims to immerse the audience in a cinematic horror aesthetic, paying homage to Romero’s style and the game itself. The mansion in which the documentary takes place will be reminiscent of Resident Evil’s Spencer Mansion and shot to mimic Romero’s filmmaking style.

The teaser trailer uses clips from Romero’s Night of the Living Dead and Capcom’s classic game, as well as voice clips from interviews with those who were involved in Romero’s film. The documentary will include archived footage and “unearthed documents” related to the unproduced project. Romero’s original script for Resident Evil leaked online and stayed relatively close to the source material, making it a shame that it was never made. Capcom reportedly didn’t care for the script due to its violent content, a decision that many find ridiculous.
