Fan Revives Infamous CD-i Zelda Game with Game Boy Port: Experience the Forgotten Flop in a New Way

In the 1990s, Philips attempted to enter the video game market with its ill-fated CD-i multimedia set-top box. Despite the failure of the CD-i, Philips had the rights to develop three Zelda games for the platform. One of these games, Zelda’s Adventure, is considered by many to be the worst Zelda game ever made. However, a fan of the series has now unofficially ported this notorious title to the Game Boy.

The story behind the Game Boy version of Zelda’s Adventure began when John Lay, a programmer and graphic designer, discovered the modern development tool GB Studio. Intrigued by the possibility of creating a portable version of the game, Lay started working on a demake during the COVID-19 lockdown.

Zelda’s Adventure for Game Boy, which took around 14 months to complete, aesthetically resembles 1993’s Link’s Awakening and incorporates features from the Game Boy Color games Oracle of Ages and Seasons. The music was composed by Beatscribe.

To play this unique port, fans can download the ROM from Lay’s Itch page or play it directly in their browsers. They can also watch a full playthrough of the fan game on Lay’s YouTube channel. While Lay has no plans to demake the other two CD-i Zelda games, he enjoyed working on this project and appreciates the positive feedback received from the community.

Sydney Chandler to Star in Noah Hawley’s Alien Series: New Take on Classic Sci-Fi Heads to FX

Noah Hawley’s Alien series has found its lead in Sydney Chandler, as confirmed by FX. The project, shrouded in secrecy, is set to begin production this year. Details about Chandler’s role in the series are scarce, but it’s expected she’ll portray a new character, as Hawley previously stated that the series wouldn’t be a “Ripley story.”

Instead, Hawley’s vision for the series is a story about inequality set on Earth, drawing inspiration from the blue-collar space-trucker world portrayed in the original movie. Chandler has previously appeared in FX’s limited series “Pistol,” chronicling the story of The Sex Pistols, and will soon be seen alongside Colin Farrell in the upcoming Apple TV series Sugar.

Chandler and Hawley join the ranks of those attempting to reimagine Ridley Scott’s iconic sci-fi series. Fede Alvarez is directing a new Alien movie, which recently teased behind-the-scenes glimpses of production and the return of the infamous Facehugger.

Hawley, best known for his work on the Fargo TV series, brings a strong pedigree to the new Alien show. However, Ridley Scott himself expressed skepticism about the project in a 2021 interview, stating it “will never be as good as the first one.” Viewers will have the chance to judge for themselves when Alien premieres, likely in 2024.

Writers Guild of America Goes on Strike – How Streaming’s Impact on the Industry Sparks First Strike in 15 Years

The Writers Guild of America (WGA) has declared a strike, marking the guild’s first industrial action in 15 years. The Hollywood Reporter reveals that the work stoppage began on the afternoon of Tuesday, May 2. The WGA claims that the studios’ responses have been “wholly insufficient given the existential crisis writers are facing.”

The union alleges that studios and streamers have not agreed on critical issues, such as guaranteed employment duration for TV writers and protections against AI-based writing for WGA-covered work. Furthermore, proposals to minimize unpaid work have not been resolved. The current three-year contract between the WGA and the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP), representing most of Hollywood’s studios, expired at midnight Pacific time.

Negotiations continued until the last minute, but the WGA had already authorized a strike with a majority vote in April. Central to the dispute are proposed changes to accommodate the shift in the entertainment landscape caused by streaming services. As TV writers lose residual income, the WGA seeks contract changes to ensure a more stable industry in the era of streaming platforms.

The WGA also demands increased minimum pay, a new TV residuals formula, and improved working conditions, including minimum TV writing staff sizes.

The previous WGA strike in 2007-08, a historic 100-day work stoppage, disrupted live and late-night shows, delayed movies, and boosted the rise of reality TV. The current strike’s duration remains uncertain, but TV productions, including The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, Jimmy Kimmel Live!, and The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, are expected to be affected immediately. Other shows, such as Late Night with Seth Meyers, The Daily Show, Saturday Night Live, Real Time with Bill Maher, and Last Week Tonight with John Oliver, are likely to face similar impacts due to their reliance on timely writing.

Steam Deck’s Unexpected Role in Ukraine’s Military – Handheld Gaming Device Repurposed for Warfare

As a gamer and tech enthusiast, I never thought I’d see the day when a gaming device would play a role in real-life military operations. But the Ukrainian army has found a new use for the Steam Deck that doesn’t involve leisure gaming. Instead, this handheld PC is being utilized to remotely control machine gun turrets on the frontline.

According to PC Gamer and a video from TRO Media, Ukrainian soldiers are operating the “Shablya” turret (meaning “saber” in Ukrainian) using a Steam Deck. If you’ve played Tom Clancy or Call of Duty games, you know how valuable remote-controlled turrets can be in warfare, allowing gunfire without directly exposing the operator to enemy fire. The video reveals how the Steam Deck’s screen displays a feed from the weapon for target identification.

PC Gamer reached out to Aric Toler, a Bellingcat researcher who uncovered a leak of classified military documents on Discord last month. He explained why the Steam Deck is an ideal choice for military applications:

“The Steam Deck is pretty perfect when you think about it,” Toler said. “Totally native OS client, great controller you can use, touch screen, etc. It makes perfect sense for the Steam Deck to be used, assuming the software is Linux-compatible (unless they went through the godawful process of dual-booting Windows on a Steam Deck).”

At a base price of $399, the Steam Deck is also significantly more affordable than the “insanely expensive” bespoke control modules typically used. It’s fascinating to see how technology transcends boundaries and finds new applications in unexpected places.

Gaming Industry Layoff Wave Hits Dauntless Developer Phoenix Labs – Impacting Talent and Future Projects

Recent weeks have seen a surge in gaming industry layoffs, with Phoenix Labs, the developer behind Dauntless, becoming the latest casualty. In February, GamesBeat reported that the studio’s management bought Phoenix Labs from Singapore-based Garena, which had acquired the developer in 2020.

While the exact number of affected employees remains undisclosed, Polygon estimates that roughly 30 staff members lost their jobs, based on the company’s LinkedIn profile. In a statement to Polygon, Phoenix Labs detailed their efforts to reassign affected employees:

“During the reorganization, we strived to find new roles for as many employees as possible. Despite our success in reassigning numerous individuals, we ultimately had to part ways with some exceptional talent. Approximately 9% of our workforce, including those in Montreal and remote workers in the United States, were impacted. To ease the transition, we have offered severance packages, extended benefits coverage, and job placement assistance to all affected employees.”

In mid-2022, Phoenix Labs announced that it had 10 projects in varying development stages, including the upcoming co-op farming game Fae Farm. The company also reported that their free-to-play RPG Dauntless had amassed over 30 million players. This layoff trend has similarly affected major gaming companies like Take-Two and Amazon.
