Despite falling short of The Super Mario Bros. Movie’s $137 million domestic opening weekend, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 has dethroned the Nintendo icons from their top spot, which they held onto for five weeks. Exciting news has emerged for Mortal Kombat fans as it appears that the upcoming movie sequel has found its Johnny Cage in none other than Karl Urban, known for his roles in The Boys and The Lord of the Rings.
The Wrap initially reported the casting news, which has since been confirmed by IGN’s reliable sources. Urban is said to be in final negotiations to portray the charismatic movie star and martial artist in the highly anticipated sequel. Although Johnny Cage was absent from the first film, his presence was subtly hinted at through a movie poster seen in the final scenes, leaving viewers eagerly awaiting his introduction in the upcoming installment.
Director Simon McQuoid explained that they made the deliberate choice to withhold Johnny Cage from the first movie, recognizing his larger-than-life personality could have overshadowed the storyline and shifted the focus away from other characters. Instead, the first film featured Josh Lawson’s captivating portrayal of the vulgar and violent Kano, leaving room for Johnny Cage to make his mark in Mortal Kombat 2.
Karl Urban’s notable roles in various franchises, including The Boys, The Lord of the Rings, Star Trek movies, and Thor: Ragnarok, have showcased his talent and versatility. His experience in video game adaptations, such as playing Doomguy in the 2005 Doom movie, further adds to the anticipation surrounding his portrayal of Johnny Cage.
While specific details about Johnny Cage’s role in the sequel remain unknown, what’s clear is that Mortal Kombat 2 will introduce a larger threat as the kombatants face the formidable Shang Tsung. The 2021 film provided moments of fun, silliness, and intensity, resonating differently with viewers. With the sequel, there is hope for further improvements and an opportunity to deliver an even more captivating cinematic experience.
As Mortal Kombat fans eagerly await the release of the sequel, the addition of Karl Urban as Johnny Cage brings excitement and anticipation for the dynamic and action-packed world of Mortal Kombat to continue its thrilling journey on the big screen.
