Activision Appoints Former Lawyer to Queen Elizabeth II for CMA Appeal

Activision hires UK legal heavyweight, Lord David Pannick KC, to lead its appeal to the Competition Appeal Tribunal (CAT) following the CMA’s decision to halt Microsoft’s planned acquisition of the company. Pannick, who previously represented clients such as Boris Johnson and Queen Elizabeth II, will be responsible for Activision’s appeal, while UK lawyer Daniel Beard KC handles Microsoft’s. The acquisition was halted due to concerns from the CMA that Microsoft’s market advantage in cloud computing combined with Activision’s vast library of popular games would lead to an unfair advantage against competitors. Activision/Blizzard CEO Bobby Kotick voiced his outrage at the decision, while Xbox Game Studios CEO Phil Spencer called it a “disappointing” ruling. The CAT will now decide if the CMA’s decision was lawful, and the move to hire Pannick indicates a prolonged period of discourse and debate is likely.

Star Wars Jedi: Survivor Weaves Together Eras of the Franchise in Impressive Fashion

In the early years of Disney’s ownership of Star Wars, the franchise’s new owners focused on the original trilogy, leaving vast swaths of Star Wars history behind. However, it appears that Disney and Lucasfilm have realized the potential in other Star Wars properties, as seen in the recently released video game, Star Wars Jedi: Survivor. The game seamlessly blends together elements from all major eras of the franchise, including the Original Trilogy, Prequel Films, Sequel Trilogy, spin-off films, and animated series.

Players take on the role of Cal Kestis, a young Jedi, in his fight against the Empire. Throughout the game, players encounter various references to other Star Wars properties, including KX security droids from Rogue One and the idea of “The Path” from the Obi-Wan Kenobi show. The game also features numerous references to the Clone Wars series, including various battle droids and the villain Rayvis. Jedi: Survivor even connects to the High Republic, a fairly new part of Star Wars that currently only exists in books and comics.

But these references are not just thrown in for nostalgia. Respawn has carefully and thoughtfully woven together all of these references to create a cohesive and impressive Star Wars experience. The game also introduces new characters, ships, planets, and Force abilities, making it a well-rounded Star Wars experience that appeals to both old and new fans. Star Wars Jedi: Survivor is an impressive example of how to successfully blend together different eras of a beloved sci-fi franchise.
