In a move to expand its film and TV offerings, Amazon Studios is reportedly considering remaking about a dozen titles from MGM’s extensive film and TV catalogue, which Amazon acquired for $8.5 billion in March 2022. Some of the titles being eyed for remakes include Robocop, Stargate, Legally Blonde, Fame, Barbershop, The Magnificent Seven, Pink Panther, and The Thomas Crown Affair. Each title is being approached differently, with some being considered for film, some for TV, and some for both. For example, Legally Blonde is being considered for both a movie and a TV series, while the Robocop TV series may come before its film adaptation. Amazon is also actively developing television series based on Fame, Barbershop, and The Magnificent Seven, and has expressed interest in a Thomas Crown Affair movie, a possible animated Pink Panther movie, and even a Poltergeist remake. While nothing is set in stone, Amazon is clearly trying to tap into beloved franchises from the past, though the development process may be slow due to complex rights issues.
