James Gunn Reveals Adam Warlock’s Inclusion in Guardians 3 as a Challenging Endeavor

When asked which aspect proved the most challenging to integrate organically, Gunn unequivocally pointed to the inclusion of Adam Warlock, portrayed by the talented Will Poulter.
Gunn revealed, “There’s no doubt it was Adam Warlock. It was really difficult. I promised Adam at the end of the other movie. The High Evolutionary has created Adam Warlock’s species, that was the whole way in.”
As he further explained, the High Evolutionary played a significant role in Rocket’s past and the introduction of the Recorder characters, Theel and Vim. Therefore, integrating Adam Warlock into the story proved to be a formidable task. Additionally, the groundwork had been laid for Ayesha’s character in the second Guardians film, further complicating the narrative dynamics.
When asked if he felt pressured to include Warlock, Gunn acknowledged that he did, sharing that the character was initially intended for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. He elaborated on his preference for having a secondary opposing force for the protagonists, exemplified by Yondu in the first Guardians film and Ayesha in Vol. 2. In Vol. 3, Ayesha and Warlock unite as an alternate opposing force.
Gunn’s foresight in considering Warlock’s inclusion since Vol. 2 led to the realization that he would fit more seamlessly into the third installment. The cosmic character, who made his debut in a 1967 Fantastic Four book, boasts a captivating backstory revolving around the Soul Gem embedded in his forehead.
