Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 dominates Super Mario Bros. movie with $282M weekend debut
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 has rocketed to the top of the box office with a whopping $282 million opening weekend, leaving its competitors in the dust. The final ride of the beloved gang has surpassed early estimates, earning $114 million from the US market and $168.1 million from overseas ticket sales, according to Box Office Mojo.
Despite falling short of The Super Mario Bros. Movie’s $137 million domestic opening weekend, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 has dethroned the Nintendo icons from their top spot, which they held onto for five weeks. Moreover, the movie comfortably outperformed Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania’s $104 million US opening and exceeded the domestic opening weekend of the original Guardians movie ($94.3 million).
The film’s emotional and twisted backstory of Rocket’s time under the High Evolutionary’s care has won the hearts of many, according to Phil Owens’ review on GameSpot. “It’s the best stuff in the film, no question–it’s very emotional and messed up in all the ways it needs to be… But outside of these flashbacks, there’s just something missing,” he wrote.
Marvel’s upcoming film, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, is already causing a buzz among fans. The first of two sequels to the 2018 animated hit film will see Miles Morales take on a multiverse of Spider-Men and is set to hit theaters in June. Don’t miss out on the web-slinging adventure of a lifetime!
