According to a recent report by Empire, the upcoming Gran Turismo film by Sony Pictures will be heavily inspired by the high-flying thrills of Top Gun: Maverick. Director Neill Blomkamp has emphasized that the movie will feature real actors driving real cars on real race tracks, all while performing heart-pumping stunts at breakneck speeds. However, Blomkamp has also promised that the film will not just be an adrenaline-fueled spectacle, but will also focus on developing compelling characters.
Blomkamp expressed his desire to make a video game adaptation that emphasizes character work, stating that “the north star for me was to make a video game title with character work that propels the movie, even more so than the racing.” Despite this, the racing sequences are still set to be extremely intense and exhilarating.
The film is based on the true story of Jann Mardenborough, a British teenager who went from being a talented Gran Turismo player to becoming a professional race car driver. The cast includes Archie Madekwe as Mardenborough, alongside David Harbour as Jack Salter and Orlando Bloom in an unspecified role.
The Gran Turismo film is just one of many projects being developed by Sony’s PlayStation Productions, which aims to bring beloved video game franchises to the big and small screens. With other titles such as The Last of Us and God of War also in development, it’s clear that the studio is committed to bringing high-quality adaptations to audiences. The film is set to release in theaters on August 11.
