Discover the Overlooked Power Rangers Character in the Latest Special Episode
Once And Always has stirred up the interest of fans with a brief mention of J.J., the son of Kat Hillard-Oliver (Catherin Sutherland) who was last referenced during the 25th-anniversary episode “Dimensions in Danger” in the Super Ninja Steel season. In Once And Always, Kat is teleported to the Command Center and mentions that they don’t have to tell her son about recent events to worry him.
It’s unclear whether J.J. is aware that his parents are Power Rangers, but the relationship between Kat and Tommy Oliver (played by Power Rangers icon, the late Jason David Frank) was hinted all the way back in Power Rangers Zeo when the two had to be “married” for a class project. The timeline of J.J.’s exact birth is unknown, but it’s definitely after Dino Thunder and obviously before Super Ninja Steel.
While J.J.’s youth was not shown on screen, his story as a young man was told through BOOM!’s Soul of the Dragon graphic novel, written by Power Ranger comic series writer Kyle Higgins, with art by Giuseppe Cafaro and Marcelo Costa, and story consultation by Jason David Frank. It tells the story of J.J. growing up and becoming a Ranger through the SPD Academy, while trying to escape his father’s shadow. J.J. eventually embraces his lineage while creating his own legacy as the SPD Green Dragon Ranger, a one-of-a-kind combination of powers he’s able to create.
J.J. has yet to make his live-action debut, and fans are excited about the possibility of seeing him in the franchise’s 35th-anniversary special. With the mention of J.J. in Once And Always, it’s clear that the franchise is still keeping the character and his story in mind.
