Mortal Kombat 12 has finally been confirmed by Warner Bros. Discovery’s president and CEO, David Zaslav, during the company’s Q4 2022 earnings call. The much-anticipated game is set to be released later this year.
Zaslav revealed that the launch of Mortal Kombat 12, along with Rocksteady’s Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League, is a key part of Warner Bros. Discovery’s video game business strategy for the coming year. He also stated that the company has “ambitious launch projections” for both games.
Despite the lack of an official statement from NetherRealm Studios, the developer behind the game, fans have long speculated about the possibility of a new Mortal Kombat game. Mortal Kombat co-creator and NetherRealm chief creative officer Ed Boon has teased fans on social media about upcoming game announcements in the past, and in October 2022 he hinted that the announcement of the studio’s next project was “coming in due time.”
Last year, some fans believed that NetherRealm producer Jonathan Andersen had leaked Mortal Kombat 12’s existence when an image of his work desk showed a file name on his monitor titled “MK12_Mast…” along with an email that read “Our fans eagerly scrape the internet.”
Mortal Kombat 11, the previous game in the series, was released in 2019 and has sold over 12 million copies as of July 2021. Mortal Kombat celebrated its 30th anniversary last year, making the release of Mortal Kombat 12 all the more exciting for fans of the long-running franchise.
