Call of Duty board game adaptation announced for release in 2023
Arcane Wonders has announced that they will be releasing Call of Duty: The Board Game, a tabletop adaptation of the popular Activision shooter series, in 2024. The game will be set within the rebooted Modern Warfare timeline and will feature maps and weapons from the Call of Duty games. A Kickstarter campaign for the game will launch this fall.
Call of Duty: The Board Game will allow players to simultaneously plan out their moves secretly and then resolve those at the same time out on the map. Line of sight is easily determined by colored lines on the map, and when you do have eyes on your opponent, combat happens. Players will have to outsmart and outmaneuver their opponent to get in the best possible position to win in a fight.
The base game of the two-player Call of Duty: The Board Game will cost $50 USD, but the game’s developer, Arcane Wonders, plans to treat it like a live-service video game with additional content being added over time. This will include operators/miniatures, weapons, maps, and modes, including Zombies and co-op campaigns. According to designer Bryan Pope, this is a “series of products within the same game system.”
Despite having the backing of multibillion-dollar company Activision, Arcane Wonders will finance the project through crowdfunding. Activision provided the Call of Duty license, but Arcane Wonders aims to create a unique gaming experience for fans. Creative director Walter Barber noted that crowdfunding is the only way pre-painted miniatures can be included in the core game.
Call of Duty 2023 is reportedly being developed by Sledgehammer Games and will continue the story of last year’s Modern Warfare 2.
