After a Turbulent Development Period, Minecraft Movie Sets Release Date
Warner Bros. has finally announced the release date for the highly anticipated Minecraft movie adaptation, which has had a troubled development history. The movie is set to hit theaters on April 4, 2025. It was also confirmed that Jason Momoa, who was in negotiations to voice the main protagonist last year, will lead the cast. The director, Jared Hess, who is known for his work on Napoleon Dynamite and Nacho Libre, was also officially listed in the announcement.
The development of the Minecraft movie dates back almost a decade, with Night at the Museum director Shawn Levy initially attached to the project before leaving. Since then, the movie has undergone several changes, including the departure of multiple directors.
In addition to the Minecraft movie news, Warner Bros. also made changes to its theatrical release schedule. Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, which stars Momoa, was originally set to release on December 16, 2022, but has now been pushed back to December 20, 2023. The Color Purple, a musical drama film, has swapped release dates with Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom and will now premiere on December 25, 2023.
Toto, a spinoff of The Wizard of Oz, has been removed from its original release date of February 2, 2024, and is currently unscheduled. The Robert DeNiro-led The Wise Guys has taken its place. Lastly, an untitled DC movie that was initially slated for release on September 22, 2022, has been removed from the schedule.
